A noun is one of the most fundamental parts of speech. Every sentence needs a noun — it tells us who or what the sentence is about.

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns are often called "naming words" because they identify everything around us.

Examples

Person: teacher, doctor, Maria, student

Place: city, London, school, garden

Thing: table, book, car, phone

Idea: happiness, freedom, honesty, courage

Quick test: If you can put "a", "an", or "the" before a word, it is likely a noun.
